An Aesthetic of Survival
(Final Major Project, MA 2009)
Like many people in the current financial climate,
I have begun to think about the value of the things
that surround me, value that goes beyond the monetary.
This project uses crafts that have gradually been
disappearing within the domestic setting to bring
to light the value of unpaid chores that happen in
that sphere. I wish to illustrate that when little value
is placed on the unpaid work of the household,
it restricts our creativity in that setting. This has
evolved from a more general interest in craft, and
the role it plays in my own practice as a graphic
designer, and the value placed on the act of craft
in the contemporary creative setting.
